The importance of commitment to law: on a personal and national evel

This morning, a thought struck me that has stayed with me throughout the day. As a lawyer by profession, I have always understood the significance of law in regulating the lives of people. The ultimate objective of law is to create a harmonious, orderly society where individuals can live happier and more fulfilling lives. Today, I reflected on how this principle applies not only to communities and nations but also to our personal lives.
Let me illustrate this with a simple example. Suppose a person decides to wake up every day at 5:00 a.m. to lead a disciplined and productive life. By making this decision, they are essentially creating a law for themselves—a self-imposed rule to regulate their life for their betterment. Now, while it is inevitable that they may falter on some days, having that law in place significantly increases the likelihood of success. The presence of a defined law reduces distractions and helps them stay focused on their goal. Over time, as they cultivate the habit and strengthen their commitment, they become more consistent, leading to a happier, more fulfilling life.
This analogy can be extended to society as a whole. The progress and happiness of any community, society, or nation are directly proportional to how closely its people follow the law. When individuals commit to abiding by laws—whether they pertain to civic responsibilities, ethics, or social norms—they contribute to the greater good. A nation where citizens uphold the law with sincerity is bound to be progressive, peaceful, and prosperous.
The key, however, lies in consistent effort and commitment. Just as the individual who sets a 5:00 a.m. rule cultivates discipline over time, a society grows stronger when its people actively work to follow laws in their daily lives. This commitment is not about blind obedience but about understanding that laws are created to safeguard the collective welfare and promote the happiness of all.
So here is my message to anyone reading this:
At a personal level, set rules and habits for yourself that improve your life. Be disciplined and work consistently to cultivate them.
At a societal level, love your country not just in words but through actions. Commit to following its laws sincerely and encourage others to do the same.
By doing so, we not only improve our own lives but also contribute to building a better, more harmonious world. After all, the strength of any nation lies in the integrity and commitment of its people.
Coming 26 November is the law day in our country India.
Let us embrace the law, both personal and societal, as a guiding force for progress and happiness.
